In the era of increasing environmental awareness, sustainable packaging solutions have become a focus. The speech by S é amus Lafferty, President of Accraply BW Labeling, elucidated the dynamic landscape of the shrink tubing market, providing valuable insights into its global context and the specific challenges and opportunities in South Africa.

The speech delved into global data on shrink tubing and emphasized its huge market share. S é amus explored the evolution of the market over the years, emphasizing the dominant position of heat shrink tubing and its universality in various end use areas such as beverages and food. Amanda Jones, the sales manager of Paragon Inks, gave an insightful speech on the formulation process of UV ink and coatings. Starting from the final application, the speech emphasizes reverse engineering to select the correct raw materials for the ideal formula.

The highlight of Amanda's speech was the introduction of the Chameleon solution, a revolutionary printing method that stands out in the field of extended color gamut (ECG). Although there are various systems such as oneECG (REVO), Hexachrome, and Opaltone, Chameleon offers a unique position in this field.

She provided a detailed introduction to Chameleon Freedom Evolution, emphasizing the printer's complete flexibility, optimization for tri color printing, Pantone color palette optimization, and fingerprint recognition technology. This method is described as flexible Extended Color Gamut (FECG) printing that ensures low Delta E values, 100% reproduction of Pantone libraries, and reduces preparation time by up to 40%.

Listed the advantages and benefits of Chameleon, including a reduction of over 30% in ink costs, improved process images, and potential substrate savings of over 30%.

Essentially, she sees chameleons as a transformative solution for the printing industry, providing not only economic benefits but also environmental sustainability and adaptability to constantly changing environments.

Pantec GS Systems Regional sales manager Roger Meierhofer emphasized the company's competitive advantage in the decoration field. His central theme revolves around winning the fierce battle for customers' attention on retail shelves.

His speech focused on key aspects of brand protection against counterfeiting and tax evasion, positioning Pantec as a reliable ally to ensure customer brand integrity. Roger showcased a range of advanced technologies, with a focus on RHINO ™ Tablets and CHEETAH ™ Rotating technology. RHINO tablet technology particularly showcases its unique design features, including bright and high gloss metallization. Roger emphasized the ability of relief embossing to provide a tangible and persuasive tactile experience.

One of the notable features of RHINO is its ability to imprint nanostructures and microstructures, producing astonishing effects even without foil. The placement of registered holograms and 3D images further demonstrates the cutting-edge functionality of Pantec products. RHINO Series is a comprehensive solution that provides online refining for single process production.

The RHINO E series is tailored for less complex label designs and shorter running times, achieving up to 18000 strokes per hour and a maximum roll paper speed of 85 meters per minute. On the other hand, the RHINO S series is designed specifically for complex label and packaging designs as well as long-distance operation, capable of achieving up to 30000 strokes per hour and a maximum roll paper speed of 150 meters per minute.

Roger emphasized at the end of his speech that Pantec's technology can be easily integrated into various printing machines or precision machining production lines, providing independent and integrated solutions.

Realize greater digital sustainability on a larger scale

Steve Low, Vice President of Service and Support at Dainippon SCREEN Europe, introduced SCREEN Commitment to sustainable innovation. To cope with the constantly changing environment, it is necessary to increase staffing levels and establish the right partnerships, with a focus on factors such as normal operating time, automation, and local support.

The impact of Covid-19 has reshaped various industries, leading to a surge in inkjet book production and bringing printing jobs back from the Far East due to supply chain disruptions. Short term digital printing has become a key factor, marking a shift towards printing. This transition to short-term digital printing is consistent with the broader goal of achieving sustainability. By reducing carbon dioxide emissions, lowering energy consumption, and reducing environmental footprint, SCREEN aims to achieve more sustainable printing practices.

The European Printing Ink Association (EuPIA) revised its standards in April, strengthening this commitment by emphasizing low migration inks, short-term processes, automation, and promoting sustainable packaging through the 4Rs (Reduce, Update, Reuse, and Recycle). Optimizing the supply chain through process automation is a key focus, which can shorten delivery time, improve efficiency, increase accuracy, and enhance inventory management.

Automated packaging production, end-to-end solutions, data sharing, and simplified processes are key components. Remote support tools, such as TRUST (Comprehensive Remote User Support Tool), including Assist, Guard, and Dialog, ensure 24/7 multilingual support, global support system, operator training, and compliance with EuPIA standards.

Looking ahead to 2024, Steve explained that SCREEN envisions a constantly evolving service model with easier maintenance, automatic log collection, intelligent nozzle control, automatic print quality adjustment, QR codes, PTZ cameras, and advanced customer support training.

He pointed out that the focus is still on speed, resolution, quality, compliance, reliability, and uptime, all of which contribute to reducing the cost of ownership.
